PetMate Giant – Not Suitable for Every Plane!
It is very important to understand that the PetMate Giant Travel Crate, although it is a standard crate that meets IATA requirements, is an enormous crate. Therefore, the crate does not fit all types of aircraft.
The main reasons the PetMate Giant does not fit all types of aircraft are:
- Cargo Door Limitations – Each aircraft model has cargo doors of different sizes. Aircraft are designed differently, and cargo doors and storage spaces vary significantly. The PetMate Giant is a very large crate, and its dimensions may be too big for the cargo doors or storage compartments of certain aircraft.
- Airline Policies – Airlines have their own internal policies regarding the maximum allowed dimensions of travel crates. One airline may allow a crate up to 85 cm in height, while another may only allow up to 80 cm.
- Availability of Cargo Space – Even if the aircraft can technically accommodate the crate, cargo space is limited. Often, space is allocated for other cargo (luggage, goods), and there may not always be room for such a large crate, especially on fully booked flights.
Therefore, before purchasing the PetMate Giant crate, and before any flight with it, it is essential to contact the airline directly, provide them with the exact dimensions of the crate, and explicitly ask whether this crate will fit in the cargo hold.

Is the crate easy to assemble and disassemble?
Yes, the crate comes in two halves (top and bottom) connected with screws. It can be easily disassembled for storage, though its large size still requires significant space. Assembly is simple and intuitive.
How far in advance should I purchase the crate?
This depends on many factors, including your dog’s temperament and your available time. In general, we recommend purchasing the crate at least a month before your flight.
Do you have used airline crates?
Occasionally, we do. You are welcome to check with us for availability.
Is this crate suitable for flying with El Al?
In principle, yes, this crate can be used to transport a dog with El Al.
Important: El Al has some smaller aircraft where crates over 80–85 cm may not be allowed. Therefore, it is recommended to check with them before purchasing the crate!

Is the crate suitable for flying with Lufthansa?
The Petmate Giant cannot be transported as “Excess Baggage” with Lufthansa.
Although the Petmate Giant meets IATA requirements, Lufthansa and many other airlines impose strict size limits for airline crates as “Excess Baggage” (part of passenger luggage).
According to Lufthansa, the maximum allowed crate dimensions for the passenger hold are: Length 125 cm, Width 75 cm, Height 85 cm.
The Petmate Giant measures 122 cm length, 81 cm width, and 89 cm height, exceeding the width and height limits for Lufthansa’s “Excess Baggage” transport.
The only way to fly a Petmate Giant with Lufthansa is via air cargo (Lufthansa Cargo). In this case, the dog and crate are shipped through Lufthansa’s cargo division under special procedures.
Therefore, if you plan to fly with Lufthansa with a dog that requires a Petmate Giant crate, contact Lufthansa Cargo directly or a professional pet shipping agent (like Pets2Fly) to arrange the flight.
