The vaccination should be given <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">at least<\/span> 30 days before the import date.<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The South African authorities require dogs and cats to enter South Africa with a rabies vaccine that was given no more than 12 months before the pet&#8217;s import.<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">If your cat\/dog is coming from Australia, New Zealand, the UK or Northern Ireland, you don\u2019t need to vaccinate it against rabies. We do, however, encourage you to vaccinate your pet against rabies as South Africa isn&#8217;t rabies-free.<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Puppies and kittens less than 3 months old, <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">don\u2019t<\/span> need to be vaccinated against rabies. In order for puppies and kittens to travel to South Africa, their mother should have been vaccinated for rabies more than 30 days and less than 1 year before their birth. Once these puppies\/kittens enter South Africa and once they are 3 months old, they must be vaccinated against rabies.<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Furthermore, we highly recommend vaccinating your dog\/cat with all the necessary annual vaccinations given in your country.<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Kennel cough vaccinations are also recommended.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Blood Tests Needed To Enter South Africa With A Pet<\/span><\/h2>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"375\" height=\"250\" class=\"size-full wp-image-15828 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.pets2fly.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/Other-Tests-Needed-For-Pet-Travel.jpg\" alt=\"Hand holding blood serum\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.pets2fly.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/Other-Tests-Needed-For-Pet-Travel.jpg 375w, https:\/\/www.pets2fly.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/Other-Tests-Needed-For-Pet-Travel-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.pets2fly.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/Other-Tests-Needed-For-Pet-Travel-219x146.jpg 219w, https:\/\/www.pets2fly.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/Other-Tests-Needed-For-Pet-Travel-50x33.jpg 50w, https:\/\/www.pets2fly.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/Other-Tests-Needed-For-Pet-Travel-113x75.jpg 113w\" sizes=\"(max-width:767px) 375px, 375px\" \/><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">If you would like to import a dog to South Africa, your dog needs to pass the following blood tests within 30 days of the export date:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Brucella canis<\/span><\/li>\n<li dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Trypanosoma evansi<\/span><\/li>\n<li dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Babesia gibsoni<\/span><\/li>\n<li dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Dirofilaria immitis<\/span><\/li>\n<li dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Leishmania<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">If your country is free from one or more of the above diseases, your dog won\u2019t need to pass a blood test for the disease that your country is free from. Please note that the veterinary authorities of your country will need to officially state this.<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Dogs with a positive result for any of the five diseases <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">won\u2019t<\/span> be able to enter South Africa.<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Dogs that require quarantine in South Africa will be retested for the five diseases.<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">While in quarantine, if your dog is found positive for Brucella canis, Babesia gibsoni or Leishmania, your dog will need to return to its exporting country.<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">If, while in quarantine, your dog is found positive for Dirofilaria immitis or Trypanosoma evansi, you will be given the option to treat your dog with the necessary treatment. Once the treatment is done, your dog will need to be retested and it will only be released from quarantine if the results are negative. If you decide not to treat your dog, you will need to resend it back to its exporting country.<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">It is important to note that all the costs (such as quarantine, testing, treatments and resending the dog) will be incurred on the owner.<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Unlike dogs, cats imported into South Africa <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">don\u2019t<\/span> need to pass any of the above blood tests.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Veterinary Health Certificate<\/span><\/h2>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"375\" height=\"250\" class=\"size-full wp-image-15913 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.pets2fly.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/Pet-Health-Certificate.jpg\" alt=\"Pet Health Certificate need for pet travel\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.pets2fly.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/Pet-Health-Certificate.jpg 375w, https:\/\/www.pets2fly.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/Pet-Health-Certificate-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.pets2fly.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/Pet-Health-Certificate-219x146.jpg 219w, https:\/\/www.pets2fly.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/Pet-Health-Certificate-50x33.jpg 50w, https:\/\/www.pets2fly.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/Pet-Health-Certificate-113x75.jpg 113w\" sizes=\"(max-width:767px) 375px, 375px\" \/><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">A veterinary health certificate, which is provided with the import permit, must be completed within 10 days of the flight.<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The health certificate must be filled in by a private vet. The health certificate should be endorsed by the veterinary authority of the exporting country.<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The original health certificate <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">must<\/span> be presented to the South African State Veterinarian at the port of entry.<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Dogs and cats entering South Africa from Namibia, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Lesotho and Swaziland need to pass a health check within 7 days of the flight.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Import Permit<\/span><\/h2>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"375\" height=\"250\" class=\"size-full wp-image-15832 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.pets2fly.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/Pet-Import-Permit.jpg\" alt=\"Certificate getting an approved stamp\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.pets2fly.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/Pet-Import-Permit.jpg 375w, https:\/\/www.pets2fly.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/Pet-Import-Permit-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.pets2fly.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/Pet-Import-Permit-219x146.jpg 219w, https:\/\/www.pets2fly.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/Pet-Import-Permit-50x33.jpg 50w, https:\/\/www.pets2fly.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/Pet-Import-Permit-113x75.jpg 113w\" sizes=\"(max-width:767px) 375px, 375px\" \/><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Dogs and cats entering South Africa must enter with a veterinary import permit.<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Import permits are usually issued within 2 to 5 working days.<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The original import permit <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">must<\/span> be presented to the South African State Veterinarian at the port of entry. Pet owners can send the original import permit along with the dog\/cat or it can be presented to the officials at the airport by the person that will collect the pet.<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Dogs and cats entering South Africa from the following countries <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">don\u2019t<\/span> need an import permit:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Malawi<\/span><\/li>\n<li dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Namibia<\/span><\/li>\n<li dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Botswana<\/span><\/li>\n<li dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Zimbabwe<\/span><\/li>\n<li dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Lesotho<\/span><\/li>\n<li dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Swaziland<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Furthermore, dogs entering South Africa must also have an &#8220;Animal Improvement Compliance Permit&#8221;.
